are you working on your own?

Updated: Mar 12, 2023

Whether you are driving for a carpool service once a week or occasionally as a self-employed person, you will need to pay taxes on self-employment income. Unlike your regular paycheck, taxes are not withheld, requiring additional planning and record keeping on your part.

In many cases, you are expected to pay taxes on a quarterly basis rather than paying them all at the end of the year, or you may face penalties when you file your return in April. However, you may be able to deduct many expenses related to your secondary job. See the Self-Employed Tax Center for details and worksheets.
